Johns Island, SC 29455
El Mercadito
3575 Maybank Hwy. Johns Island, SC 29455. 843-559-7216
Description: El Mercadito is quite a trip from town — nearly halfway to Kiawah and Seabrook — but worth every inch of the drive for some of the most authentic Mexican cuisine in town. Real tacos, with double layers of soft corn tortillas, plenty of pico de gallo, fresh lime wedges, cilantro, and meat fillings. Mexican shrimp cocktail and a wide variety of burritos, enchiladas, and guacamole salads fills out the rest of the menu, and the typical large mugs of beer and margaritas finish out the selections perfectly. Take it easy on the Dos Equis, though — it’s a long, dark drive back to town.
J. B.'s Smokeshack
3406 Maybank Hwy. Johns Island, SC 29455 843-557-0426
Description: J.B.’s Smokeshack is the epicenter of pork — the "flavor’s in the meat, and the sauce is on the side." The saying makes the promise and the ribs and barbecue deliver in spades. The buffet offers both good side dish surprises and some old-fashioned "white trash" choices like dirt cake. The dining room is festooned with pig-themed decorations like oven mitts and welcome mats, and the country waitstaff could strike up a conversation with a telephone pole. All in all, it’s a fantastic cultural experience underpinned by really good meat.
Live Oak Cafe and Coffee
2867 Maybank Hwy. Johns Island, SC 29455 843-557-1795
Description: Coffee, Teas & Sweets. Locally roasted coffee, homestyle breakfast, sandwiches, salads, and wraps.
St. Johns Island Cafe
3140 Maybank Hwy., Johns Island, SC 29455. 843-559-9090
Description: St. Johns Island Café on Maybank Highway is a warm, homey spot for brunch and a bit of comfort. If you’re not a Johns Islander, it can be a hike, which takes it out of the lunch running for most folks, but it is absolutely worth it to combine a leisurely trip out through the live oaks for great biscuits, eggs, grits, and the newly spiffy atmosphere. New ownership has resulted in a nice dining room redo, complete with fish tank and fancy new bar area. The bright yellow paint makes for a friendly lunch or dinner under the live oaks that line the highway.
